What to consider before booking your wedding florist.

It's exciting and admin-heavy planning a wedding. So much to think about and lots of unknowns. I have compiled some thoughts on things I think are helpful to know when it comes to planning your wedding florals.

Have a rough idea about the layout and flow of your day.

When getting in touch with your wedding florist, it is super helpful to have a rough idea of how your big day will unfold. A few things I think are particularly handy to know:

  • Rough idea of guest numbers

  • Dress code

  • Time you are getting married

  • Type of tables you are having - long or round

  • Number of people in your bridal party.

The internet will tell you the average wedding budget is around £15,000; however, the majority of content shown to you on social media costs considerably more.

Chat GPT and Instagram are at odds with each other on this one. Chat GPT will tell you the average wedding floral budget is around £1500; however, the floral wedding content shown on Instagram or Pinterest rarely reflects this price bracket.

This can be disappointing, but fret not!

Talk to your florist openly about your flower budget (I promise, of all the people in the world, your wedding florist is highly unlikely to be ripping you off. Popcorn at the movies? Possibly. Hair supplements? Maybe. Pre-grated cheddar? Absolutely—but not your wedding florist).  This way, we can show you designs that cater to your budget and will work well with the space and your general vibe.

A few beautiful, bespoke, curated designs for your wedding day are so much more substantial than trying to recreate something perhaps slightly larger but without the budget to achieve it.

And on that note

Pinterest, Instagram, etc. are showing you a lot of floristry that's not from real weddings.

And whilst we are on the topic of social media, a lot of the imagery on there is not from actual weddings. It's planned photoshoots.

Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t have all the beautiful things displayed in this content, but it's worth noting that these designs have been made without the pressures of the timings of an actual wedding, without having to think about guest numbers, caterers' access, weather, health and safety, etc.

Flowers are bought in wholesale.

This may sound very obvious, but it is something to consider. Similar to supermarket products, flowers are sold in wraps to florists at wholesale. These wraps may contain anything from 5 stems to 60 stems of a certain flower.

This means that ‘a few stems’ of something can feel quite pricey at times. A whole wrap may have needed to be bought for the said stems.

Having a foliage wedding doesn’t make it cheaper.

I don’t know when this rumour began, but at this stage, it's a questionable old wives' tale. Foliage is expensive, particularly beautiful, tonal eucalyptus, berried foliage, and anything super tall.

Foliage can be hard to grow and also hard to source, especially for those ethereal, integral pieces that ‘make’ a design.

If you are lucky enough to have access to foliage you would like to include in your wedding, let your florist know; perhaps it can be incorporated into the designs. Be prepared for a very shaved, pruned bush/tree—you will be surprised how much of the stuff we florists can get through.

Enjoy the process of booking your wedding florist. There is a florist for every couple, and we are here to help and give you advice for every season, venue, budget—you name it!
